In snowboarding, collaborations between brands are sometimes a good fit and other times fairly comical. This winter the famous Pabst Blue Ribbon beer company collaborated with Union Bindings to produce a quality binding that will look just as good jibbing the park as hanging on the board rack during après.

Featuring the Union Contact Chasis, team highback, aluminum heelcups, open toe straps, PBR flag and the Union Lifetime Warranty, these binders are a nice set. While typical snow bindings come in a cardbox box with little else, the PBR bindings come in a very nice carrying case, which could double as a beer tote for beach or backcountry booter missions. In addition to the bindings, the box also includes a Spacecraft collab hat and a snowboard shaped PBR bottle opener—a solid package. I think having these bindings will knock seconds off your shotgunning beer time.

Less than 200 pairs were and only distributed to your core snowboard shop. If you want a pair, start looking as these will not be sold for long.

With the forthcoming launch of the new K2 Backcountry snowboard line, the fine folks at K2 Snowboarding and Atlas Snowshoes invited a group of magazine folks for a group media event at Mt. Baker. While a snowboard trip to Mt. Baker is normal for myself, this trip was a bit different as we were given the chance to check out new backcountry product from K2/Atlas, shred with K2 Pros Shaun McKay and Aaron Robinson, and receive a fairly extensive backcountry course from American Alpine Institute including route-finding, snow profiles and more.

From somebody that grew up riding the Baker backcountry via bootpack, accessing terrain with a splitboard and snowshoes was a nice treat. This was actually my first time using a snowboard-specific snowshoe and I was pleasantly surprised on how easy it was to hike and cover terrain much faster and easier than post-holing. In the past, one of my major concerns with splitboarding was that the skins sometimes did not stay on the board. It appears K2 has solved this issue with skins that attach to both the front and rear of the board when in ascend mode. Impressive—way cool and well done K2.

While ease of access and quality gear is a large part of the Backcountry snowboarding experience, safety certainly needs to be addressed and K2/Atlas was quick to mention this at every opportunity. Given the warm and snowing conditions and twitchy snowpack, it was good timing to check out a pit profile and learn a bit more about traveling in avalanche terrain. The American Alpine Institute is known to have one of if not the best avalanche safety courses in the Northwest and offers trips all over the globe to remote locations. Our media group was lucky to have a few hours of intense avalanche training, which included pit digging, terrain analysis, a run or two, and a group discussion over cold beverages.

Thank you K2 Snowboarding, Atlas, AAI, Connor, Hunter and Ryan, for re-introducing me to the familiar Mt Baker backcountry with a new perspective on both equipment and snow safety.

With over 70in of snowfall the previous week and two weather days already burned, Monday was the day for the 75 men and 27 ladies to go after the 45k purse, bragging rights and grand prize Samurai Katana. An impressive athlete roster, from Travis Rice to Rob Kingwill showed up and did not disappoint, with Mark Carter taking first for the men and Shannan Yates swinging the sword for the ladies. A great day, a great event. The ‘Bird is the word. Believe it.

Seattle, WA -- With many pre-shred season events based around sales, ski swaps and catching a multitude of new films, the 4th annual Downtown Throwdown rolled into Occidental Park in the heart of Downtown Seattle. For those not familiar with the zone, think a one acre version of NYC's central park, except concrete instead of grass and complete with strange characters, street corner business people, totem poles and sightseers. This was a very fitting setting as with the current dirtball steeze at times, “it was hard to tell who was a snowboarder and who was homeless” (Eric Newgard, K2).

When I arrived at the contest, I knew that TDDT was going to be a good one, but this show surpassed my expectations…Snowboy Productions, Lib Tech, Think Thank, Snowboard Connection and Ride Washington, Quiksilver and Pyramid Brewery went all out to put on a killer contest that brought mountain shred stoke to the urban setting--and handed out fittingly simple cardboard checks to the winners. You know it’s a good one when grown adults are fighting from swag in the product toss. Winter is on the way.

Seattle, WA - Think Thank always brings a unique perspective to snowboarding. With their ‘recession proof’ mantra and crew of underpaid dirts traveling nine-in-a-van from city to city and next-level mini-shred, it’s always entertaining to see what Burtner and company have in store. So when this year’s release titled “Cool Story” came through Seattle’s King Cat Theater, we made the pilgrimage south to see what this year’s offering was all about.

After some warm up beverages at the 21+ friendly King Cat Theater, a large crew of slightly inebriated shred heads rtook in Snowboard Connections local offering "As Good As it Gets" before the main feature. Solid riding from Northwest up and comers got the crowd rolling before Burtner got on the mic to present this year’s epic: a borderline feature-length film that traces the crew throughout the season, with a weekly update from a different rider. Diverse parts from newcomers Tim Eddy and dark horse Jason Robinson along with local heads Blair Habenicht and Matt Edgers added some flavor to the usual creative riding from Burtner, Genovese and the rest of the crew. Suffice to say everyone left stoked and smiling with winter on the mind.

Thanks to SnoCon, Summit, Lib, Burtner and all the others who helped put the event on. Another solid offering from Think Thank is in the books, go out and cop it for yourself.

Mt. Baker - In continuing funny feelings LLC's commitment to clean, progressive aesthetics, we are pleased to introduce frequency TSJ's new Designer, Jessie Carlson. With her recent BFA in graphic design, tenure as a previous frequency TSJ intern, and an intuitive sense of what we do around here, Jessie is proving to be a perfect addition. She and her shepherd/husky mix Koda work with Jessie Lu Design to keep things correct upstairs in the art dept. Jessie Carlson is a charger who leaves the boys staring at her dust -- both on the single track and on the hill.

With two passports, one graduate degree and a deep stoke for the mountains, frequency TSJ is equally pleased to announce the addition of Colin Wiseman as Senior Editor. Working with our publisher, Jeff Galbraith, to establish editorial and continue frequency TSJ's reputation as snowboarding's true voice, Colin brings smarts, drive, and a real understanding of snowboarding's roots and future. With personal travel from New Zealand to South America and a shred tutelage in the Canadian Coast Mountain range, Colin is definitely down for the rad. He is in Argentina getting it on our behalf right now.

Iron Maiden is one of the few bands that speaks to many generations. The voice is heavy metal.

When I told my dad I was going to Iron Maiden, his first reaction was "weren't those guys playing in the 80's?" Well they were. But these guys still rock like they're in their 20's. And they proved it this Monday at the White River Amphitheater. The venue is a fairly nice mid sized theater which holds roughly 20,000 people. The one draw back is that the venue is a half hour from Seattle and has neither camping or lodging near by. This is where K2 came into play as the mighty folks from Seattle, based on the huge number of Maiden fans in their office, rented a school bus for transportation. Yes...a school bus-with a banquet permit (aka you can drink on the bus) and a bus driver with a nickname of ‘Metal', the "K2 bus" left K2 headquarters and arrived at the venue in just over 2hrs with only a single hectic restroom stop.

Once darkness fell, Maiden took the stage, playing galloping song after song in true Maiden fashion. If I hadn't known better I could have sworn that this was just a recording from there greatest hits album. Flashing the freq badge I smooth talked myself into the "photo" section and the rest is like a dream. I was literally 5 feet away from Dave Murray for most of the never-ending set. They played all the classics like The Trooper and Run to the Hills, complete with over the top stage antics and a giant Eddie doll. Leaving the show, I was in awe of what I witnessed and I jumped straight back into the party bus and, beer in hand, headed for home.
