One of the most original events in snowboarding and art is coming to Portland. I AM SNOWBOARDING, a collaborative art project in honor of Jeff Anderson, opens at the NEMO gallery (1875 SE Belmont), on Friday, January 8. The opening party is slated from 6-10pm and will feature collaborative art from snowboard photographers and artists, music from Kandi Coded and DJ Joelskool, raffles from the sponsors (Volcom, Vans, Lib Tech, etc.) and if that wasn't enough, Terry Kidwell will be on hand showing off some of his original snowboards soon to be put up for auction.

If you can't make the opening night party, the artwork will still be on display until Jan. 31 to peruse at your leisure. For more information and to buy prints to benefit the Jeff L. Anderson Memorial Fund and The Brothers Skate Park, visit iamjla.org.

Are you ready for a little early season shred racing? No speed suits, no wax techs, no drug testing, just full-on fun, ripping downhill fun for a good cause. Get down to the 3rd Annual Dirksen Derby on December 13 at Mt. Bachelor.

The Dirksen Derby is a unique 'snowboard rally' race. Divisions include Men, Women, Groms and Sit-Skiers. New this year is a splitboard division that times competitors uphill and back down. Also new this year is an official race-timing system. Last year they used stopwatches, if that tells you anything about the level of self-seriousness on course. All you have to do to participate is show up, pay $25 and go fast. Prizes are gear donated by Josh Dirksen's numerous and generous sponsors. Think of it as the Baker Banked Slalom without the history or the entry restrictions. At the end, all regestration fees are donated to Tyler Eklund who sustained a serious spinal injury while snowboarding.

For the micro type, check out Mt. Bachelor. Now get out there and practice your race tuck!
