The North Face Masters at Crystal Mountain, WA

The North Face Masters at Crystal Mountain, WA

With not the most snow in the history of Washington winters there is still ample coverage at Crystal Mountain for a good round of friendly freeriding competion (and actually quite a bit of pow to be had in the backcounty and next to trees!) The North Face Masters' second stop has brought all sorts of riders out of the woodwork - strengthening the community of freeride athletes and showcasing the exceptional terrain of one of Washington's hidden gems.

From the top of Northway Peak competitors looked down upon various line choices leading to a finishing gate where cheering spectators and a barbecue awaited. Nick Perata announced while just uphill judges Julie Zell, Tom Burt, Temple Cummins and Andy Hetzel evaluated riders' lines and style.

I was fortunate to be standing in the right place when a few riders dropped in....

Here is Lucas Debari, very comfortable airing into his line.

Rob Kingwill, charging into the abyss as it began to snow.

And Matt Edgers with a healthy half-cab stalefish jamming into solid surfy turns.

With all the fanfare, high spirits, and colorful 8 person tents, it kind of felt like a medieval carnival. Stan-tech and Trevor P. from Mervin Mfg. were sighted amidst the mystical blue cloud, and rider Karl Berdimurat floated out of the frame on the way to an impressive line into tight trees.

People were sending it! It was so great to be with riders from around the country, and as far away as Chile, convening to celebrate a lifestyle we love so much - one centered on the experience and learning found in our mountain homes.

To see how competitors placed on day one please visit the official North Face Masters results page.

And if you're in the neighborhood, come check out the vast terrain of Crystal Mt., you'll be sure to meet a local glad to share a favorite run or two!

Here Sean Freyer boosts the booster, and O.G. Crystal Mountain local Matt Clark blasts into his run.

Good times for all! Peace, Love, Gnu!
