Mt Baker, WA (November 13, 2009) – With a base over 60 inches and clearing skies, Mt Baker opened yesterday and it was one of the best in recent memory.

While a typical opener might feature groomers, rock bonks and sketchy side hits, a plethora of shreds from Whistler to Seattle arrived to bluebird, deep powder, and a snowpack deep enough to open the whole mountain save the canyon and gunner’s bowl. Pillows that usually don’t fill in until Christmas were good to go and the sidecountry of Shuksan Arm, Blueberry Ridge, and even Mount Herman saw a steady train of backcountry prepared riders getting mid-winter-esque turns on opening day.

Thanks to the Howatts and the rest of the Mt Baker crew for working hard to get the mountain ready early and get everyone their season’s passes amidst a flurry of first-day pow turns. Another ten inches is falling at the moment and conditions should only get better for the weekend.
